Kas lies in South Darfur, in western Sudan, on the route that runs from Nyala towards Zalingei and the Jebel Marra highlands. From above, the town is a low, spread-out settlement of compounds and open spaces, with streets that follow tracks rather than a formal plan. Around it the land opens into savanna, crossed by seasonal watercourses that fill in the rainy months and dry out for the rest of the year.

The mountains of Jebel Marra rise to the north-west, and their slopes feed the wadis that pass near the town. Like many towns in the region, Kas serves the surrounding villages as a place of trade and services, with roads leading out in several directions across the plain. On a map, the settlement appears as a loose cluster of built areas and paths, very different from the dense grids of larger cities.
