Kirkby in Ashfield is in the Ashfield district of Nottinghamshire, close to Sutton-in-Ashfield and a short drive from the M1. From above, it is a long, fairly compact town whose older core near the church gives way to rows of terraces and later housing estates. Old colliery land and green spaces fill the gaps between neighbourhoods.
Coal mining shaped the town for generations, and although the pits have closed, their legacy is visible in the tight terraced streets built for miners and in reclaimed former industrial land now used for parks and new development. The Robin Hood Line railway, which runs between Nottingham and Worksop, passes through the town and gives the plan a clear north-south line.
