Komaki lies on the Nobi Plain north of Nagoya, and from above most of it reads as a dense, even fabric of streets, factories and farmland. The exception is Mount Komaki, a small, rounded, wooded hill near the middle of the city that rises abruptly from the flat ground. It is the kind of landmark a map makes obvious: a green island surrounded on every side by the regular grain of the lowland.
In 1563 Oda Nobunaga built a castle on the hill, and in 1584 the area was a focus of the Komaki and Nagakute campaign between Hideyoshi and Tokugawa Ieyasu. Today a castle-style building housing a history museum stands on the summit. Modern Komaki is a transport hub: the Tomei and Meishin expressways connect here, and Nagoya Airfield lies near the city's southern boundary.

The Tomei and Meishin expressways, two of Japan's main intercity motorways, connect at Komaki, drawing broad curving interchanges across the northern edge of the Nagoya area.
Airfield runway
Nagoya Airfield, used by regional flights and the Air Self-Defense Force, lies near the city's southern boundary. Its long straight runway contrasts sharply with the surrounding street grid.
