Kottappally lies in the northern part of Kerala, in the Malabar region, a little way inland from the Arabian Sea. As in much of this coast, there is no sharp line between town and countryside. From above, houses are spread among trees and gardens, and roads twist between them in a network that follows the land rather than a plan.
The map shows many small lanes branching off a few connecting roads, along with paddy land, canals and streams in the lower ground. Settlement is continuous across the area, so the street pattern links smoothly with neighbouring villages, and the green spaces between houses are part of the texture rather than empty gaps.
