Lebu is the capital of Arauco Province in the Biobío region, on the Pacific coast of southern Chile. The town sits where the Lebu River meets the sea, and on a map the river mouth and the shoreline define its shape. Streets follow the flat ground near the water, then climb toward the hills that rise behind the coast.
The town grew in the nineteenth century around coal mining, which shaped the Arauco coast for decades, and fishing remains important today. The shoreline here is exposed to the open Pacific, with long beaches and rocky stretches. The 2010 earthquake noticeably raised this part of the coast, and the change could be seen along the shore afterward.
A Lebu map poster frames a small port between river, ocean and hills. The coastline makes a strong, uneven edge on one side of the sheet, and the river cuts inland on the other.
