From above, León reads as a steady chequerboard. The streets form a nearly regular grid of square blocks, mostly single-storey houses built around interior courtyards, and the pattern holds for many blocks in every direction. At its centre is the Parque Central and the broad white mass of the cathedral. The rest of the city seems measured from that point, one block at a time, until the streets thin out into farmland.

The Cathedral of the Assumption, the largest cathedral in Central America, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. About thirty kilometres to the east lie the ruins of León Viejo, the city’s original site, which was abandoned in the early seventeenth century and is also listed by UNESCO. León was Nicaragua’s capital for long stretches of its colonial and early republican history, and it is still known as a university city.

A León map poster shows the grid at the scale where its regularity turns graphic: church plazas breaking the rhythm at intervals, the older indigenous district of Sutiava on the western side, and the ragged edge where paved blocks meet open land. The Maribios volcanic chain and the Pacific shore lie just beyond the frame, and they shape the city’s horizon even when the map leaves them out.
