Macclesfield lies in east Cheshire, where the Cheshire plain meets the western edge of the Peak District. The River Bollin runs through the town, and the old centre is on the higher ground above it. To the east, the Macclesfield Canal follows the contour of the hillside, and beyond it the land rises sharply into moorland.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, Macclesfield was one of the most important centres of silk production in Britain. The mills, terraces and the town's museums still reflect that period. On the map, the tightly packed terraced streets around the centre contrast with larger suburban areas and with the open, hilly country to the east.
