Manado spreads around a broad bay on the northern tip of Sulawesi, facing the Celebes Sea. The city fills a narrow coastal plain and climbs into the hills behind it, so streets near the water are dense and regular while those inland twist along ridges and valleys. Several small rivers cut down to the bay, and a reclaimed waterfront strip runs along the shoreline.
Offshore lie the islands of Bunaken National Park, known for coral walls and diving, and the cone of Manado Tua, a volcanic island rising straight out of the sea. Manado is the capital of North Sulawesi and a centre of Minahasa culture, with a cuisine known across Indonesia for dishes such as tinutuan, a vegetable porridge.
