Mima lies in the western part of Tokushima Prefecture on Shikoku, following the valley of the Yoshino River. On a map the city is long and narrow: settlements and roads line both banks of the river, while the land rises steeply to the south into the Shikoku mountains, toward the high country around Mount Tsurugi.
The Wakimachi district is known for its udatsu, the raised firewalls built by prosperous merchants during the era of the indigo trade. The preserved street runs close to the river and appears on the map as a tight, linear strip of old lots, a small but precise mark of the town's past as a trading post on the Yoshino.
