Modugno sits a few kilometres west of Bari on the level limestone plain that stretches inland from the Adriatic. From above, a compact historic centre of narrow, irregular lanes is surrounded by a wider grid of later apartment blocks. Beyond those lie the neat outlines of fields and olive groves. Large industrial sites and major roads frame the town's edges.
Modugno is now part of the greater Bari area, and much of its growth came from being close to the city's airport and industrial zone. The older streets still follow the curved, tightly packed pattern of Apulian farming towns, where houses stood close together and the countryside began right outside. On a map, both eras are still easy to see.
