Moga lies in the Malwa region of Punjab, on land so flat that its map is shaped almost entirely by human lines. The town centre is a dense network of short streets and bazaars, the railway runs through it, and main roads leave in several directions across farmland divided into long, rectangular fields. Irrigation canals add a few straight, quiet lines of water.
The town is a district headquarters and a market centre for one of the most productive farming areas in India. Moga is also known as the site of Nestlé's first factory in India, opened in the early 1960s to process milk from local farms, which helped build a dairy network across the surrounding villages. Many families in the district have relatives living abroad.
