Mosopa is a village in the Ngwaketse area of southern Botswana, in dry savanna country at the eastern edge of the Kalahari. From above it looks nothing like a gridded town. Homesteads and compounds are spread out across the land, linked by a loose web of tracks, with a few firmer roads connecting the village to the rest of the district.
That loose pattern is exactly what makes the map interesting. Lines branch and curve according to use rather than planning, following the easiest paths between yards, fields and gathering places. The space between them is wide, and on a black and white print that openness becomes the main character of the design, much as the open landscape is part of daily life here.
