Nihommatsu lies in central Fukushima Prefecture, between the Abukuma River to the east and the volcanic mass of Mount Adatara to the west. The old centre sits beneath the castle hill, and on a map the streets curve around the base of the hill rather than running in a strict grid. The river valley and the rising mountain slopes frame the town on either side.
The castle, also known as Kasumigajō, survives as stone walls and reconstructed gates within a park known for its cherry blossoms and autumn colours. The town is also known for its lantern festival and its autumn chrysanthemum displays. Mount Adatara appears in the poetry of Kōtarō Takamura, whose wife Chieko came from this area.

To the west, the ground rises toward Mount Adatara and the roads thin out as they climb. That quiet area balances the denser town and hints at the mountain beyond.
