Obando lies on the coastal lowlands of Bulacan, just north of Metro Manila, where the land and Manila Bay are hard to tell apart. On a map the town is defined by water. Rivers and tidal channels wind through it, and much of the surrounding area is divided into fishponds whose straight dikes form a large mosaic of rectangles. The built-up streets follow the narrower strips of dry land.

The town is best known for the Obando Fertility Rites, a dance festival held each May in honour of San Pascual Baylon, Santa Clara and Nuestra Señora de Salambao. Couples hoping for a child join the procession and dance through the streets toward the church. The tradition is recognised as part of the Philippines' intangible cultural heritage and draws visitors from across Luzon.

An Obando map poster shows a place shaped by its closeness to the bay. There are fishing communities along the channels, roads that follow the higher ground, and a church at the heart of the procession route.
