Pajok sits in the far south of South Sudan, in Eastern Equatoria, near the border with Uganda. From above it is not a compact town but a loose web. Unpaved roads and footpaths branch between clusters of homesteads, cultivated plots and patches of woodland. The rolling land around it is greener than much of the country.
Places like this give a map a different texture from a planned grid. Lines curve with the ground, meet at small open spaces and fade into the countryside without a clear edge.
