Palmi sits on a raised terrace above the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, looking out over the Gulf of Gioia. To the south the land climbs steeply to Monte Sant'Elia, and the shore below it is the Costa Viola, a stretch of cliffs and small coves. On the map, dense town, steep slope and open sea sit very close together.
After the earthquake of 1783 the town was rebuilt on a regular plan, and the grid is still clear in the centre, with straight streets and several squares. A Palmi map poster brings out that order and the winding roads that zigzag down to the beaches at Tonnara and around the headlands.
Palmi is known for the Varia, a huge devotional structure carried through the streets on the shoulders of hundreds of bearers. The festival is part of a group of Italian processions listed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.
