Parla lies about twenty kilometres south of central Madrid, on the flat, open plain that stretches toward Toledo. From above, the town looks like a well-defined urban island. A dense core of apartment blocks and streets is clearly separated from its neighbours by fields, motorways and open land, so it never blends into one continuous suburb.
For centuries Parla was a small farming village. Most of its rapid growth came from the 1970s onward, when new residential districts were built for people working in Madrid. The old centre is still visible as a knot of irregular streets, surrounded by larger, more regular blocks laid out in later decades.
Parla is known for its tram, a line that runs in a loop around the town and links the neighbourhoods to the commuter rail station. On a Parla map poster, that loop gives the town a clear outline.
