Perris sits in the Perris Valley of western Riverside County, in Southern California's Inland Empire. The terrain is flat and open, and the city follows the American pattern of a mile-square grid of arterial roads, with residential tracts, warehouses and remaining farmland filling the spaces between them. Interstate 215 runs through the city on its way north toward Riverside.
The original downtown is a small, older grid near the railway, the heart of a town that grew up in the late nineteenth century. Today that rail line carries Metrolink commuter trains, and the Perris Valley extension ends here, linking the valley with Riverside and beyond. On the map the old core appears as a tighter pattern set within much larger modern blocks.
Just northeast of town lies Lake Perris, a reservoir surrounded by a state recreation area and granite hills. Perris is also known for skydiving, thanks to a long-running drop zone, and for a large railway museum.
