Porvoo is one of the oldest towns in Finland, about fifty kilometres east of Helsinki, where the Porvoo river flows south into a bay of the Gulf of Finland. On a map the river is the defining line, a broad ribbon that separates the old town from the newer districts on the opposite shore, crossed by a small number of bridges.
Old Porvoo shows up as a tangle of narrow, curving lanes climbing a hill toward the cathedral, a medieval street pattern that survived when straighter plans were laid out elsewhere. The contrast is plain from above: irregular, tightly packed streets by the water, and more regular blocks added beside them in later centuries as the town grew.
The cathedral is where Alexander I opened the Diet of Porvoo in 1809, an early step toward Finnish autonomy, and the poet J. L. Runeberg spent his later years in the town. Toward the archipelago
South of the centre the river widens into a bay, and the coastline breaks into inlets, points and islands, giving the lower part of the print a looser, watery character.
