Radom lies in the south of Mazovia, and from above its centre shows several layers of history. The medieval town, founded in the fourteenth century, has a compact square and short streets, while the nineteenth-century city extends from it in straighter, wider avenues. Beyond these, residential districts and industrial areas spread outward in all directions.
The Mleczna river runs through the city, a modest stream bordered by green spaces that appears as a gentle winding line on the map. Railways and ring roads frame the centre, and parks and cemeteries form open patches among the dense blocks.
Radom has long been an industrial city, and in 1976 its workers' protests became an important moment in Poland's path toward the Solidarity movement. The city is also home to a well-known air show held at its airfield. A Radom map poster shows a city built in layers around its old market square.
