Romulus lies in Wayne County, southwest of Detroit, and its map is shaped above all by Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, which occupies a large part of the city's northern area. The runways form a set of long, parallel lines that no other feature in the region can match, and roads, rail lines and industrial parks have arranged themselves around them.
Beyond the airport, Romulus follows the survey grid common across southeast Michigan: straight roads running in a regular pattern, with neighbourhoods, remnants of farmland and wooded patches filling the squares between them. Interstate 94 and Interstate 275 cross the area, and a few small creeks cut across the otherwise flat terrain.
A Romulus map poster is one of the more unusual designs in the region: part airport diagram, part Midwestern grid.
