Ruiru lies in Kiambu County on the northern edge of the Nairobi metropolitan area, and its map is organised around the Thika Superhighway, a wide multi-lane road cutting straight through toward Thika. Estates and new neighbourhoods spread on both sides, while rivers carve narrow valleys through the ridges, giving the street pattern its uneven, branching shape.
The town grew from a railway stop and coffee centre into one of Kenya's fastest-growing urban areas, driven by commuters, industry and new housing. Large coffee estates still appear on the map as broad, open blocks with neat internal tracks, in contrast with the dense residential streets that have filled in between them.
New planned developments and campuses sit on its fringes, part of the steady northward growth of greater Nairobi.
