Saint Cloud grew up on both banks of the Mississippi River in central Minnesota, and the river is the defining line on its map. It runs through the city from north to south, crossed by several bridges, and the downtown grid sits on the west bank. Neighbourhoods reach out in all directions, and the city spreads across three counties.
The area's granite quarries gave Saint Cloud its nickname, the Granite City, and flooded quarries and parks still mark the landscape to the west. St. Cloud State University occupies a campus beside the river south of downtown, and on the east bank the Munsinger and Clemens Gardens sit close to the water. Small wooded islands break up the channel.
