Saladas is in Corrientes province in northeastern Argentina, among some of the oldest settlements in the region. Its map shows the classic Spanish colonial pattern: a regular grid of square blocks arranged around a central plaza. The main roads leave the grid and run out across the flat, low countryside.
What makes the surroundings distinctive is water. This part of Corrientes is low and poorly drained, and the land around Saladas is scattered with lagoons, marshes and wet hollows of all sizes. On a map these appear as rounded, irregular shapes pressing close to the edges of town and to the roads.
