Samba is one of the districts that make up greater Luanda, lying south of the old city centre along the Atlantic coast. From above it reads as a dense, fine-grained fabric of streets pressed between the shoreline and the higher ground inland, with the water forming a clean, curving edge along its western side and giving the whole district a clear sense of direction.
The coast here turns toward the long sand spit of the Mussulo peninsula, which shelters a calm bay south of the capital. On a map the contrast is striking: the tight lines of the neighbourhoods give way to open water and a thin strip of land that stretches away to the southwest, pale and almost empty beside the crowded city.
A Samba map poster captures that meeting of city and sea in simple black and white. Main roads link the district to central Luanda and to the southern suburbs, and the street pattern loosens and tightens as it follows the terrain. To the south, the sand spit of the Mussulo peninsula encloses a sheltered bay, adding a long pale sliver of land and wide still water to the lower part of the map.
Dense neighbourhoods
Inland, closely packed blocks and narrow lanes create a fine, intricate texture of lines, broken only by the wider roads that carry traffic toward central Luanda.
