San lies in the Ségou region of central Mali, on the flat Sahelian plain a short distance from the Bani River, a major tributary of the Niger. From above it appears as a spread of low compounds and unpaved lanes. The street pattern is loose and irregular, and a few main roads lead out across the plain toward other towns of the region.
The town is known for the Sanké mon, a collective fishing rite held each year in a sacred pond on its outskirts. UNESCO recognises it as intangible cultural heritage. San also has a large mud-brick mosque in the Sudano-Sahelian style. Its broad earthen walls belong to a building tradition seen across the Niger basin.
A San map poster is less about monuments than about how a Sahelian town meets its landscape: dense clusters of courtyards, open ground between neighbourhoods, and seasonal water nearby. In black and white these textures become an abstract, fairly graphic image. It suits someone who knows the town or the wider Bani valley.

Much of the town is built as walled family compounds. On a map they produce a fine, irregular texture of small blocks and narrow passages instead of a strict grid.

A handful of main roads radiate out over the flat plain. They link San with the rest of central Mali and give the poster its few strong lines.
