Schwerte sits on the southern edge of the Ruhr region, where the dense street network of Dortmund thins out and the valley of the Ruhr river takes over. On a map the town's centre looks tight and irregular, a small knot of older streets that stands out against the looser suburban blocks and green spaces around it. The river curves along the southern side and gives the whole composition its lower line.

The historic core grew around the church of St. Viktor, and Schwerte was once counted among the towns of the Hanseatic League. That older layer is still visible from above in the short, bending lanes near the centre. Around it, later housing spreads outward in quieter patterns, cut through by main roads leading north toward Dortmund and across the valley to the south. Rail is the other thread that shapes the town.
