Setapak sits on the northeastern edge of Kuala Lumpur, where the flat centre of the capital starts to fold into low, forested hills. From above it reads as a patchwork of housing estates, each with its own loop of curving streets, stitched together by a few arterial roads that carry traffic toward the city centre and out toward Gombak.
Water shapes the map more than first appears. The Gombak River and its smaller tributaries run through and along the district in narrow green corridors, and several lakes and retention ponds sit between the estates. Wider expressways pass along the edges, their interchanges drawing large looping figures that contrast with the tight residential streets inside.
The district is also a study area: several colleges and university campuses occupy the slopes, their quads, car parks and sports fields showing up as open rectangles among the rows of terraced houses.
