Shibushi faces the Pacific on the eastern side of the Ōsumi Peninsula in Kagoshima prefecture, at the head of the wide bay that carries its name. The coastline here is a broad, smooth arc of sandy beach and pine forest, and on a map it gives the city a strong, simple outline: land on one side, open water curving away on the other.
The port is the city's defining feature. It handles grain and feed for the livestock farms of southern Kyushu, and ferries sail from here to Osaka. Just offshore sits the national petroleum stockpiling base, a block of storage tanks on reclaimed land whose geometric shape stands out sharply against the soft line of the beach.
A little way out in the bay lies Biroujima, a small island covered in fan palms and protected for its vegetation. Behind the coast, the town climbs into hills and farmland cut by river valleys.
