The Ōi River is the defining line in Shimada. On a map it is a broad, braided channel, much wider than the water usually flowing in it, running down toward Suruga Bay. The town spreads along its eastern bank. There, the older road-town layout meets rail lines, a later street network and fields reaching toward the surrounding hills.
In the Edo period Shimada was a post station on the Tōkaidō. The Ōi was famously left unbridged, so travellers were carried across by porters and could wait days when the water was high. Today the Hōrai Bridge, a long wooden pedestrian bridge over the river, is recognised as the longest of its kind in the world. West of the river, the Makinohara plateau is covered in tea fields.
A Shimada map poster makes the river the main subject: a pale, wide band crossing the frame, with the town gathered on one side. The long thin lines of the bridges span it, road and rail running alongside, and the edges soften into farmland.

Hōrai Bridge
This long wooden footbridge crosses the Ōi on low piers. On the map it is a fine straight line over the broad riverbed, and it is often described as the world's longest wooden walking bridge.
Tōkaidō heritage
The old highway corridor still shapes the town's east–west spine. Shimada grew as a post station where travellers gathered before the difficult river crossing.
