Soest lies in North Rhine-Westphalia, on the fertile Soester Börde plain along the ancient Hellweg trade route. It was one of the most important towns of medieval Westphalia and a member of the Hanseatic League, and its map still shows that past clearly. The old town is enclosed by a nearly round ring of ramparts and moats, much of which survives as a green belt around the historic centre.

Inside the ring, lanes twist between half-timbered houses and a remarkable number of churches built from the local green sandstone, including St. Patrokli and the Gothic Wiesenkirche. Roads still leave the old town where its gates once stood, radiating toward the surrounding villages. Each November the town hosts the Allerheiligenkirmes, often described as the largest fair held in an old town centre in Europe.
