Sohar lies on the Batinah coast of northern Oman, where a flat plain runs between the Gulf of Oman and the Hajar Mountains. On a map the city stretches along the shore rather than inland. A coastal road runs parallel to the beach, with a band of date-palm plantations and walled gardens behind it. The pattern is loose and horizontal, more a string of districts than a single dense centre.

Near the waterfront stands Sohar Fort, a whitewashed fortress that marks the historic core of a town that was once one of the leading ports of the Arab world. Local tradition links Sohar with the seafaring tales of Sinbad. A Sohar map poster sets that old harbour town beside its modern counterpart, the large industrial port and free zone built north of the city.

That newer port is unmistakable from above: a set of geometric basins, breakwaters and quays cut into an otherwise smooth coastline. Between it and the old town, straight highways link residential blocks, souqs and farms. The contrast of hard engineering against the soft grain of the palm belt gives Sohar a particularly legible outline on paper.
