Stanley is a town in north-west County Durham, built on high ground between the valleys of the region. It grew in the nineteenth century with coal mining, and its street pattern still reflects that history. From above, rows of terraced houses run along the slopes, the town centre sits on the ridge, and smaller former colliery villages surround it on the hillsides.
The height of the town is its defining feature. Roads climb from the valleys to the centre, and from the upper streets there are wide views across the Durham countryside. A Stanley map poster shows these climbing roads and the long parallel terraces that follow the contours, a pattern common to many mining towns in the North East.
The pits closed long ago, and much of the land they occupied has returned to green space and woodland. The Beamish open-air museum, which recreates life in the region's industrial past, lies just to the east. On the map, the town becomes a network of streets across a high plateau, with open country and the former villages at its edges.
