Stepney sits in the East End of London, inside the borough of Tower Hamlets, and from above it reads as a close weave of short residential streets held between two long arteries. Mile End Road runs along the north side and Commercial Road along the south, both pulling traffic toward the City, while the blocks between them stay small, interlocking and irregular in a way that only an old parish can produce.

The oldest fixed point is St Dunstan's, the parish church whose churchyard makes a clear open patch in the street pattern. Stepney was heavily bombed during the Blitz, and the rebuilding that followed shows on the map as a change of texture: stretches of Victorian terraces give way to the larger footprints of post-war estates, their courtyards and green spaces set at angles to the older lines.
