Sugito is a town in eastern Saitama Prefecture, on the flat Kanto plain north of Tokyo. On the map, residential neighbourhoods, rice fields and small rivers are mixed together. The rail line runs through the town, and a planned residential area with curving streets sits alongside older settlements that follow field boundaries and waterways.
Like many towns in this part of Saitama, Sugito combines farming with commuting. Paddy fields remain close to housing estates, and trains take residents into the Tokyo area. The rivers and irrigation channels of the low-lying plain were shaped by centuries of flood control, and they still run across the landscape.
