Summit Map Poster
Summit sits on a ridge of the Watchung Mountains in Union County, New Jersey, about twenty miles west of Manhattan. The city takes its name from this high position. From above, its streets climb and curve over uneven ground, with a compact downtown near the railway station and quieter residential streets spreading out over the hills.
The railway shaped Summit from the start: the line to New York made it a summer retreat and later a commuter city, and trains still run from the downtown station to Manhattan. On a Summit map poster, the rail line cuts through the centre, with shops and offices clustered on either side of it.
To the west, the Passaic River forms the city's boundary, winding through a wooded valley below the ridge. Parks and green spaces, including the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, add open shapes among the houses. In black and white, the curving streets, the river and the rail line create a varied, carefully balanced composition.
