Surulere is one of the best-known districts on the Lagos mainland, and it is densely built from edge to edge. Its map is a close weave of residential streets organized around a few major roads and busy junctions. Ojuelegba is one of the most recognized crossroads in the city. From above, the pattern looks almost uniform, broken only by a handful of large open sites.
The largest of these open sites is the National Stadium complex, which hosted major national and international events for decades. The Teslim Balogun Stadium stands nearby. Surulere has long been associated with sport, entertainment and music, and it features often in Nigerian songs and films as a shorthand for mainland Lagos life.
