Sutton is a London borough on the city's southern edge. From above, it is made up of several separate centres: Sutton itself, Carshalton, Cheam, Wallington and Worcester Park. Each has its own high street, surrounded by suburban streets, mostly built between the 1920s and 1950s. Railway lines run between them. To the south, the land rises toward the chalk hills of the North Downs, and the houses thin out.

Water runs through the eastern part of the borough. The River Wandle begins here from springs, and Carshalton Ponds, which the river feeds, sit in the heart of the old village. Nearby are Beddington Park and the Wandle's wooded valley. In the west, Nonsuch Park covers the site of the Tudor palace built by Henry VIII. At Hackbridge, the BedZED housing estate became a well-known early example of low-carbon design.

A Sutton map poster shows how outer London is actually put together: separate villages joined by rail and suburban streets, green spaces running between them and the edge of the countryside to the south. The long pedestrian high street in the centre of Sutton forms the main line of the composition. It is an honest, detailed map of the part of London where many people put down roots.
