Tlemcen sits in northwestern Algeria, not far from the Moroccan border, on a broad terrace at the foot of the Tlemcen mountains. From above, the city lies in a band between the cliffs of the Lalla Setti plateau to the south and farmland falling away to the north. Its streets bend to follow the ground, and the dense historic core stands out clearly from the looser districts built around it.

For several centuries Tlemcen was the capital of the Zayyanid kingdom and an important stop on routes between the Maghreb and the Mediterranean. Its Great Mosque dates from the Almoravid period in the twelfth century, and the Mechouar citadel marks the old seat of power. Both lie inside the compact medina, where short, twisting lanes create a tight texture on the map.

A Tlemcen map poster also takes in the landmarks around the centre. To the west are the remains of Mansourah, a walled camp-city whose ruined minaret still stands. To the southeast, the Sidi Boumediene complex sits on the slope at El Eubbad. Together with the orchards and roads that link them, these places turn the map into a record of a city built in layers.
