Tracy lies in San Joaquin County, on the western edge of California's Central Valley, where flat farmland meets the foot of the Altamont Pass. It began in 1878 as a railroad junction on the Central Pacific line, and the older downtown still follows a compact grid near the tracks. Around it, newer neighbourhoods spread outward in loops and cul-de-sacs.
From above, transport lines frame the city. Interstate 205 runs along its northern side and Interstate 580 passes to the southwest. Beyond them, the California Aqueduct and the Delta-Mendota Canal trace long, smooth lines across the fields. Much of the surrounding land is still orchards and row crops, laid out in the rectangular plots typical of the valley.
A Tracy map poster shows a city that is still growing: an old railroad core, a ring of postwar and recent subdivisions, and the farm grid waiting beyond. The composition is clean and orderly. The contrast between the valley's straight lines and the curved residential streets gives the print a quietly graphic character.
