Upata lies in the northern part of Bolívar state in eastern Venezuela, south of the Orinoco and the industrial cities of Guayana. On a map the town is a mostly regular street grid in a shallow valley. Around it the terrain starts to fold into the hills and savannah that lead toward the old rocks of the Guiana Shield.
The main roads leave the centre in a few clear directions and link Upata to the larger cities to the north and to the towns further south. Beyond the edges of the grid, the map opens into farmland, pasture and wooded slopes. Streams and small drainage lines break up the surface.
