Usuki sits on the eastern coast of Oita Prefecture, where a narrow bay opens toward the Bungo Channel. On a map the town is a tight knot of streets pressed between the water and wooded hills, with small rivers running down to the harbour. The old core keeps the bending, irregular lanes of a castle town, while newer blocks spread across the flatter ground near the shore.
The castle that shaped this layout was built in the sixteenth century by the daimyo Ōtomo Sōrin on Niujima, a rise that was then surrounded by the sea. Land reclamation has since joined it to the town, but its outline still stands out on the map as a raised, rounded island of green among the roofs, with the old streets arranged around its foot.
Outside the centre, the valleys hold the Usuki Stone Buddhas, a group of figures carved into soft volcanic rock and designated a National Treasure of Japan. Old town lanes
Around the castle, narrow lanes lined with temples, breweries and older houses bend and fork, a pattern that contrasts clearly with the straighter roads of later districts closer to the water.
Usuki Bay
The sheltered bay gives the town its eastern edge, with harbour walls and piers where ferries leave for Shikoku across the Bungo Channel.
