Utinga is a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in the region associated with the Chapada Diamantina, a landscape of plateaus, ridges and river valleys in the centre of the state. The town itself is compact, with a small cluster of streets and blocks at its core and roads leading out into the surrounding rural land.
The name is shared with the Utinga River, which flows through the region and belongs to the wider Paraguaçu basin. On the map, watercourses and the lines of rural roads provide most of the structure beyond the town, while fields and scrubland fill the space between them.
