Västervik sits on the Swedish east coast in Kalmar County, where the mainland breaks into inlets and a long chain of islands. From above, the town reads as a compact centre pressed against the water, with quays and small harbours curving along the shore. Roads follow the land between bays, so the plan bends and forks rather than settling into a single grid.

The archipelago is the defining feature on any map of the area. Thousands of islands, islets and skerries spread out from the coast, and on a black-and-white print they become a fine scatter of shapes against open water. The inner town has an older core of small lots and narrow lanes, and the ruins of Stegeholm castle stand near the harbour, where the town's summer song festival is held.
