Valencia is part of the city of Santa Clarita, in the valley north of Los Angeles where the Santa Clara River runs west toward the Pacific. From above, it looks quite different from the grids of the Los Angeles basin: neighbourhoods are arranged as clusters of curving streets and cul-de-sacs, separated by broad arterial roads, parks and the wide, sandy bed of the river.
Valencia was developed from the 1960s by the Newhall Land and Farming Company as a planned community on former ranch land. One of its defining features is the network of paseos, walking and cycling paths that pass beneath the main roads through underpasses and over them on bridges, linking homes to schools and parks. Six Flags Magic Mountain and the California Institute of the Arts are both here.

The broad, often dry riverbed crosses the valley from east to west, a wide band flanked by trails and open land that separates neighbourhoods to the north and south.
Curving neighbourhoods
Residential areas are laid out as self-contained clusters of curving streets and cul-de-sacs, each framed by arterial roads, giving the map a cellular, almost botanical texture.
