Yongpyong Resort sits in Daegwallyeong-myeon in Pyeongchang County, in the Taebaek Mountains of Gangwon Province. On a map the resort village is a compact grouping of hotels, condominiums and lift bases on the valley floor, with runs spreading up the wooded slopes of Balwangsan. A long gondola links the base with the summit area high above.
Yongpyong opened in the 1970s and is one of the oldest large ski resorts in South Korea. It has hosted international competitions for decades. During the 2018 Winter Olympics its Rainbow slopes were used for the slalom and giant slalom races. Many television viewers also remember the resort as a filming location for the drama Winter Sonata.
A Yongpyong Resort map poster shows a clear arrangement of valley and mountain: the curving access roads and dense buildings of the base, the fan of runs above, and the emptier highland around them. At a wider scale, the roads toward Alpensia and the Yeongdong Expressway add structure to the edges of the frame.
