Abarkūh lies in Yazd Province in central Iran, on a high desert plain between mountains. From above, the town shows two different fabrics. The old core has narrow, winding lanes and densely packed adobe houses, built for shade and shelter from the heat. Newer districts are laid out on straighter, wider streets around it.
The town is best known for the Cypress of Abarkūh, a tree estimated to be several thousand years old and often cited as one of the oldest living trees on earth. Abarkūh also has a historic ice house, a domed structure used to store ice through the summer, and the medieval tomb tower Gonbad-e Ali.
