Afuá lies on the Marajó archipelago in the state of Pará, in the delta where the Amazon meets the Atlantic. The town is built on marshy, tidal ground, and most of it stands on stilts. Instead of ordinary roads, its streets are raised walkways of wood and concrete running above the water and mud, forming a network that connects houses, shops and public buildings.
Because of this, cars and motorcycles are not permitted in the town, and people move on foot or by bicycle, including pedal-powered bicitaxis. The unusual layout has earned it the nickname Veneza Marajoara, the Venice of Marajó. Rivers and channels surround the town, and most connections to the outside world are made by boat.
