Agde lies on the Hérault River a few kilometres from the Mediterranean, in the Occitanie region of southern France. Founded by Greek sailors in antiquity, it is one of the oldest towns in the country. On a map the historic centre forms a tight cluster beside the river, with newer districts extending toward the coast and the resort of Cap d'Agde.
The old town is built largely from black basalt quarried from Mont Saint-Loup, a nearby extinct volcano, which earned Agde the name black pearl of the Mediterranean. The fortified Cathedral of Saint-Étienne, built in the same dark stone, rises above the river like a castle, and the narrow streets around it keep a medieval pattern.
Just outside the old town, the Canal du Midi passes close by, with an unusual round lock that lets boats move between the canal and the Hérault.
