Agen sits on the right bank of the Garonne in the Lot-et-Garonne department, halfway between Bordeaux and Toulouse. The old town is a close pattern of narrow streets and small squares near the river. Wider boulevards and the railway run along its edges, and to the north the ground rises toward the wooded Ermitage hill.
The most memorable feature on the map is the Canal de Garonne. It runs through town and crosses the river on the Pont-canal d'Agen, a stone aqueduct of twenty-three arches that carries boats high above the water. Agen is also known across France for its prunes and for its rugby club, which has been a fixture of the French game for generations.
